Hasan Mahmud has returned to Bangladesh after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially recalled him from his stint with Kent to manage his workload. The fast bowler was withdrawn on the eve of the club’s County Championship match against Lancashire, shortening an original No Objection Certificate (NOC) that was scheduled to run until September 27.
The recall comes as Kent occupies third place in Division Two, trailing second-placed Northamptonshire by two points in the race for promotion. With two rounds remaining in the Rothesay County Championship, Kent will be without the bowler who led their recent red-ball efforts. Mahmud finished his spell with 26 wickets in four County Championship appearances at an average of 15.76.
Shahriar Nafees, the BCB’s cricket operations in-charge, stated that the decision was based on the volume of cricket the pacer has played. “Given the amount of cricket he has played and our upcoming schedule, his workload is getting excessive and he needs a break. That is why we decided he should return,” Nafees said.
The BCB has prioritized Mahmud’s fitness for a schedule that includes the Asian Games, starting September 29, followed by a multi-format tour of South Africa and home series against Afghanistan and the West Indies. Analysis of the move suggests the BCB is prioritizing the Asian Games as a central fixture of their 2026 calendar over individual county development.
Kent’s Director of Cricket, Simon Cook, acknowledged the loss of the pacer during the promotion chase. “We’re disappointed to have lost Hasan’s services for the County Championship run-in, but we respect the decision made by the BCB after constructive talks, and wish him well this Winter,” Cook said.
The departure leaves the Kent bowling department under-strength, particularly after South African seamer Glenton Stuurman’s overseas spell ended early due to a quad injury. However, Kent will retain the services of Bangladeshi pacer Syed Khaled Ahmed for the final two matches of the season against Lancashire and Durham.
Statistically, Mahmud’s exit is a major loss for Kent; he was the club’s leading wicket-taker in Division Two during his short stint. The club must now rely on their domestic seamers and Khaled Ahmed to bridge the gap to the promotion spots in the final two fixtures of the year.
