Lancashire County Cricket Club has announced the dismissals of Director of Cricket Performance Mark Chilton and Director of Women’s Cricket David Thorley as part of a significant restructuring of the club’s performance department.
The overhaul follows a 2026 season where the men’s first XI remained in Division Two of the Rothesay County Championship. The team recently suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Kent in the penultimate round of the season. Chilton leaves Emirates Old Trafford after a 20-year association with the club, having served as a player, captain, and coach before moving into senior administration.
David Thorley’s departure comes as the women’s team prepares for a major squad transition. Seven first-team players, including England international Kate Cross and all-rounder Fi Morris, are scheduled to depart at the conclusion of the 2026 season. While the women’s side secured a trophy double in 2025, the 2026 campaign has been described by the club as underwhelming.
The administrative changes coincide with the impending retirement of Chief Executive Daniel Gidney, who will step down at the end of 2026 after 14 years in the role. The combination of these departures points toward a total leadership transition heading into 2027.
“Decisions like this are always incredibly tough to make, but we believe a restructure of the performance set-up is necessary to move the Club forward,” Gidney said in a club statement. “For the men’s side, the County Championship is at the heart of the Club’s cricketing vision, while for Lancashire Women, our aim is to consistently challenge for major honours.”
Analysis: A Clean Slate for 2027
The timing of these dismissals—occurring after the defeat to Kent and just prior to the final match of the season against Durham—suggests the board has accelerated its transition plans to address the failure to secure promotion to Division One. With the Director roles vacant and Gidney departing, the club is effectively wiping the slate clean to install a new leadership era for the next cycle.
Lancashire has not yet identified interim personnel to manage the final week of the 2026 season or the early recruitment phase for 2027. Further updates regarding the search for a new Chief Executive and the revised performance structure are expected following the conclusion of the domestic summer.
