Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the IPL 2027 season. The former India international joins on an initial one-year contract with an option for an extension, succeeding Stephen Fleming.
Fleming, who served as head coach since 2009, officially stepped down in July 2026. The transition follows a period where the five-time champions failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons between 2024 and 2026, finishing eighth in the most recent campaign.
The appointment was made on the recommendation of MS Dhoni. Dhoni served on the selection committee alongside Rupa Gurunath and current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to finalize the decision.
“It was MS who suggested Zaheer, and the cricket management team, comprising Rupa and Ruturaj Gaikwad, agreed that he fits the role,” said CSK Managing Director Kasi Viswanathan. “He has previous experience of working in the IPL with MI and LSG, and given that, we felt he is the right choice.”
Zaheer, who previously held coaching and mentorship positions with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, cited the unique environment at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium as a factor in his arrival.
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL,” Zaheer said. “As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”
The coaching change arrives alongside reports that Sanju Samson was involved in the leadership group’s decision-making process. The involvement of the Rajasthan Royals captain in these discussions has led to reports suggesting a potential move to the Chennai-based franchise for the 2027 season.
While the head coach position is settled, the franchise has not yet confirmed the status of other support staff members, including long-serving coaches Eric Simons and Michael Hussey. Additionally, while Dhoni’s role in selecting the new coach confirms his ongoing influence in the franchise’s structure, his status as a player for the 2027 season remains unconfirmed.
