Victoria has named Glenn Maxwell and Scott Boland in a 13-man squad for Friday’s One-Day Cup match against New South Wales at Junction Oval. The fixture, scheduled for September 25, 2026, will be the first competitive match played under lights at the St Kilda venue following the installation of new floodlights for the 2026-27 season.
Maxwell returns to Melbourne five days after captaining the Belfast Wolves to a runner-up finish in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) final in Ireland on September 20. The 37-year-old is representing Victoria as a freelance player this season, having opted not to take a state or national contract after retiring from international one-day cricket in early 2025.
The squad also includes Scott Boland, who will make a single appearance before departing for South Africa on September 27. Boland is part of the Australian Test squad for a three-match series starting in October.
Victorian coach Chris Rogers emphasized the impact of having the veteran duo available for the domestic circuit. “Any time that those guys can come in and help us, and from a point of view of what the other developing players are going to see as well, they’re influencing our squad,” Rogers said.
Victoria will undergo a leadership change for the match as Will Sutherland is unavailable, having joined the Australia A One-Day squad for their tour of India. Both Victoria and New South Wales head into the contest with 1-0 records after securing wins over Queensland in their opening matches.
New South Wales will be captained by 23-year-old Lachlan Shaw, who led the team to a successful run chase on September 22. The match serves as a point-scoring fixture for the Hodge-Matthews Cup, the aggregate trophy contested between the two states.
The upgrade to Junction Oval’s infrastructure is intended to allow the ground to host more frequent Big Bash League and international women’s matches under lights. The new lighting system will be tested in a competitive environment for the first time during this Day-Night encounter.
The match is set to begin at 2:00 PM AEST, coinciding with the Grand Final Eve public holiday in Victoria. While Boland will shift focus to red-ball duties in South Africa after the game, Maxwell’s further participation in the One-Day Cup will depend on his global freelance commitments.
