Warwickshire ended the opening day of their final-round County Championship fixture against Leicestershire with a five-run lead, having dismissed the visitors for 125 at Edgbaston. The hosts reached 130 for 4 at stumps with six wickets remaining in their first innings.
Ethan Bamber and England’s Chris Woakes led the bowling effort. Bamber took 4 for 42 to reach 61 wickets for the season, moving him level with Kyle Abbott as the joint-leading wicket-taker in Division One. Woakes finished with figures of 3 for 20 from 11 overs as Leicestershire collapsed after choosing to bat first.
Warwickshire started this final round 11 points clear of Somerset at the top of the table. Following the day’s play, Woakes noted the significance of the match for the club. “It’s a big week for us and a big week for the Club. We’ve had a great year and to be in this position going into the last game of the season is really nice. An opportunity to win silverware is where you want to be,” he said.
Leicestershire assistant coach James Taylor acknowledged the performance of the league leaders. “Credit to Warwickshire, there is a reason why they are top of the table and they showed exactly why today,” Taylor said.
The visitors are currently managing on-field struggles alongside an off-field disciplinary appeal. Leicestershire are contesting a 27-point deduction imposed for a ‘poor’ pitch rating during a previous match against Glamorgan. The club attributed the surface condition to extreme heat and a Bollywood film shoot held at the ground. A ruling on the appeal from the Cricket Discipline Commission will impact the final standings at the bottom of Division One.
Warwickshire will resume on Day 2 with Sam Hain and Ed Barnard among those looking to extend the first-innings lead. The home side requires 14 points from the fixture to guarantee the title without depending on results elsewhere.
