Durham reached 355-5 at the close of Day 1 in their final County Championship match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Emilio Gay led the innings with 141, while Ben McKinney surpassed 1,000 first-class runs for the season during his knock of 71.
Gay’s century was his fourth in ten County Championship innings during the 2026 season. He anchored the visitors through 96 overs, following a season that included a six-Test stint for England. McKinney’s contribution of 71 saw him reach his seasonal milestone before the pair were separated. Their progress came against a Lancashire attack missing James Anderson and Arav Shetty, who were both rested for the final round of the season.
Durham have already been confirmed as Division Two champions and are attempting to finish the campaign as unbeaten champions. This feat was last achieved by Lancashire in 2019. Head coach Ryan Campbell attributed the season’s performance to the team’s preparation following the previous year’s results.
“We have a group who understand that our standards weren’t where they should have been at certain points last season,” Campbell said. “So we’ve worked really hard to get them back to where we want them to be and to push beyond that.”
The match takes place as Durham navigates the international retirement of Mark Wood. On September 22, the pace bowler announced his departure from all forms of international cricket due to persistent knee injuries. Wood remains available for Durham in the T20 Blast next season.
“On medical advice, Test cricket and 50-over cricket are not possible, so the England dream has slowly been ground out of me over the last year,” Wood stated regarding his decision.
Lancashire’s bowlers took late wickets to slow the scoring, but Ollie Robinson and Kasey Aldridge remained at the crease at stumps. They will resume on Day 2 as Durham looks to build on their first-innings total.
