Warwickshire have secured the 2026 County Championship Division One title after defeating Leicestershire by an innings and 79 runs at Edgbaston. The victory marks the club’s ninth title and their first since 2021.
Ed Barnard captained the side to the championship after taking over the role in March 2026, following Alex Davies’ decision to stand down. The result left Somerset as runners-up for the seventh time this century, despite individual efforts from Tom Abell and Tom Lammonby during the campaign.
A key factor in the title run was seamer Ethan Bamber, who finished the season as the leading wicket-taker in Division One. Bamber, who moved from Middlesex at the end of 2024, claimed 69 wickets at an average of 20.73. Following the final match, Bamber self-deprecatingly described himself as an average cricketer.
The squad also benefited from the full availability of Chris Woakes, who retired from international cricket in September 2025. Woakes contributed 27 wickets and 228 runs across the campaign. Teammate Oliver Hannon-Dalby highlighted the impact of having Woakes available for the full domestic season.
“He could easily be sat in Saint-Tropez right now with his feet up… But he’s here trying to win a championship for us, which says a lot about him, says a lot about what he thinks about the club, and what we’re trying to do right now,” Hannon-Dalby said.
While Warwickshire celebrated at Edgbaston, the defeat confirmed Leicestershire’s relegation on the field. However, the club still has an unresolved appeal against a 27-point deduction. That penalty was issued due to a poor pitch at their home ground, which was attributed to a Bollywood film shoot.
