John Simpson has signed a two-year contract with Nottinghamshire for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The wicketkeeper-batter will depart Sussex at the end of the 2026 season as the Hove-based club manages significant financial constraints.
The agreement covers both the Rothesay County Championship and the Metro Bank One Day Cup. Simpson’s move to Trent Bridge also confirms that South African wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne will not return to Nottinghamshire in 2027.
Simpson departs Sussex after a successful tenure where he captained the side to the Division Two title in 2024 and a third-place finish in Division One in 2026. Despite his leadership, financial restrictions at Sussex—including a reported £1.3m loss in 2025 and a projected £1m shortfall in 2026—prevented the club from offering a contract extension.
Sussex Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace admitted that the club’s fiscal health dictated the decision. “We would have loved to have kept John at Sussex for a few more seasons, but our financial situation meant it just couldn’t happen,” Farbrace said.
Simpson described his three years at Hove as a highlight of his career. “The three years I have spent in Hove have been some of the most enjoyable and rewarding of my career,” he said.
The transfer occurs alongside a broader leadership restructure at Sussex. Farbrace is scheduled to transition into a part-time Director of Cricket role starting November 1, 2026. Matt Walker has been appointed as the new Sussex Head Coach and will take over the first-team responsibilities in November.
