India clinched a 2-0 series victory over West Indies in Guwahati after completing their highest-ever successful ODI run-chase, overhauling a target of 406. Led by captain Shubman Gill’s record-breaking double-century, the hosts reached 409/2 in 43.3 overs to secure an eight-wicket win with 39 balls to spare at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Gill finished unbeaten on 223 off 133 deliveries, setting a new world record for the fastest ODI double-century by reaching the milestone in 117 balls. The knock also stands as the highest individual score by a captain in ODI history. Gill had earlier noted at the toss that the pitch featured “a bit more grass” and looked “patchy at times,” suggesting early assistance for fast bowlers.
The chase began with a dominant opening stand as Rohit Sharma scored 101 off 75 balls. This was Rohit’s 35th ODI century, during which he became the latest batter to reach 12,000 career runs in the format. While India’s top order controlled the second innings, the match featured a total of five centuries, setting a new world record for the most hundreds in a single ODI match.
Earlier, West Indies posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405/7, crossing the 400-run mark for the first time. Their innings was built on centuries from John Campbell (101), Shai Hope (104), and Amir Jangoo (114). It marked only the sixth instance in ODI history where three batters from the same team reached triple figures in a single innings. West Indies captain Shai Hope later remarked that he “definitely would have fielded as well” had he won the toss.
In the field, Kuldeep Yadav became the fastest Indian spinner to reach 200 ODI wickets, achieving the feat in 123 matches. However, India’s pace attack struggled; debutant Auqib Nabi recorded the most expensive figures for an Indian bowler on ODI debut, conceding 84 runs in 8.5 overs without a wicket. Combined with Gurnoor Brar, the pair allowed 180 runs for just one wicket.
With the series already decided, the two teams will move to New Chandigarh for the third and final ODI. The match is scheduled to take place at the PCA International Cricket Stadium on October 3.
