Australia faces a significant selection crisis ahead of the first Test against South Africa after Cameron Green and Matt Renshaw sustained injuries during the final ODI in Potchefstroom. The incidents leave the touring squad with only six fit players currently available for the top seven batting positions if the pair and the already sidelined Josh Inglis are ruled out.
The first Test is scheduled to begin in Durban on October 9. Australia is already without reserve wicketkeeper-batter Inglis, who remains unavailable due to a broken finger suffered in the opening match of the series.
Green’s fitness is a primary concern for the team’s balance. The all-rounder was struck in the groin by a Corbin Bosch full toss and later experienced abdominal discomfort after attempting a hook shot two balls later. His potential absence would remove a key seam-bowling option intended to support the attack in Durban.
Renshaw was forced from the field during the 14th over of the South African innings. Fielding at square leg, he was struck on the right wrist by a Ryan Rickelton pull shot and did not return to the field.
Despite the injuries, Mitchell Marsh confirmed he is returning home to Perth as scheduled. While there was speculation regarding a potential Test comeback due to the batting shortage, Marsh ruled himself out of the red-ball leg of the tour.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be good enough to retire from Test cricket,” Marsh said, though he admitted he had not yet received medical updates on his teammates. “I sound like a footy coach here, but I actually haven’t seen them.”
Australia currently lacks a specialist batting backup in the 16-man squad. If Green and Renshaw are unavailable for the series opener, the selection panel will be required to fly in reinforcements from the domestic circuit.
Australia won the third ODI by 45 runs via the DLS method to conclude the white-ball leg, though South Africa secured the series victory 2-1.
