Rohit Sharma Confirms Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Test Debut for India
On July 12, the first Test between West Indies and India will take place at Windsor Park in Dominica. Ahead of the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has announced that Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young batter, will make his Test debut for India.
Jaiswal to Open with Rohit Sharma, Gill to Bat at No.3
In addition to his debut, Jaiswal will also open the innings for India alongside Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill, previously the opener, will move down to the no.3 spot.
Jaiswal was part of the Indian team as a standby player during the World Test Championship final against Australia but did not get the opportunity to play. However, after an impressive IPL campaign with the Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal has earned his debut against West Indies.
“Gill will play at No.3 because he wants to play there. He had a conversation with Rahul Dravid and expressed his desire to bat at No.3. This allows us to have a left-right combination at the opening. Hopefully, this arrangement works well for us in the long term,” Rohit said in a press conference.
India to Play with 2 Spinners
Rohit Sharma also confirmed that India will be playing with two spinners against West Indies. They have the options of Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, and Akshar Patel to choose from.
“Looking at the wickets, it seems we will play with two spinners and three seamers. The last match here in 2017 saw many wickets taken by spinners. Additionally, during our training here, we observed some bounce on offer,” Rohit added.
Jaiswal’s Impressive Performances
In the IPL 2023, Jaiswal scored 625 runs for the Rajasthan Royals, including one century and the fastest-ever IPL fifty. He also performed well in the Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy, scoring centuries in both tournaments.
