The visitors had fallen to 107-6 before the pair took control, eventually lifting the side to 372 all out. Northamptonshire reached 15/0 at the close of play, with Ricardo Vasconcelos (11*) and Luke Procter (1*) set to resume on Wednesday morning trailing by 357 runs.
Madsen anchored the innings with 151 off 217 balls, hitting 17 boundaries to record his second century of the season. Aitchison provided aggressive support, striking 106 from 132 deliveries—including 14 fours and a six—to register his second career first-class hundred.
The 197-run stand for the seventh wicket mirrored a similar feat from earlier this season; the same pair shared a 208-run partnership at Lord’s in May. Their resistance on Tuesday shifted the momentum away from a Northamptonshire attack that had looked set to wrap up the innings early in the afternoon.
Liam Guthrie was the most successful bowler for the hosts, finishing with 3-66. During his spells, Guthrie reached two career milestones by claiming his 100th first-class wicket and his 50th for Northamptonshire.
Derbyshire’s bowling attack was bolstered by the return of Mohammad Abbas following international duty. The seamer bowled five overs for eight runs without a wicket during the evening session. Derbyshire coach Mickey Arthur had expressed his enthusiasm for the pace options prior to the match, stating: “I am really excited. My mouth waters as to the attack we could be putting out.”
The fixture remains critical for Northamptonshire, who sit two points ahead of Kent in the race for promotion. However, weather may interrupt the second day, with a 94% chance of rain forecast for Wednesday in Northampton.
