Dublin Guardians secured their first victory of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) 2026 at Malahide on September 9, defeating Belfast Wolves by eight wickets. The result, which took place during the opening match of the tournament’s Malahide leg, was defined by a career-best bowling performance from Craig Young.
Young claimed 5 for 21 to dismantle the Wolves’ batting order, utilizing swing-favourable conditions and inconsistent bounce at The Village. The seamer was named Player of the Match for a spell that left the visitors unable to establish a stable platform.
The Belfast Wolves were bowled out for 107 in 19.4 overs. The collapse included golden ducks for both Glenn Maxwell and David Miller, exposing a middle-order vulnerability that the Guardians exploited throughout the innings.
Reflecting on the batting failure, Maxwell cited the local conditions as a primary factor. “The difficult pitch and inconsistent bounce made batting challenging, and by the time we understood the conditions, we had lost too many wickets,” Maxwell said.
Dublin captain Ravichandran Ashwin noted the tactical importance of the result following the team’s initial round in Voorburg. “Losing can become a habit just like winning, so today’s first home game at Malahide was important. We wanted to make improvements, kept things simple, and hit the stumps more consistently,” Ashwin said.
The run chase was completed in 14.3 overs, with Dublin finishing on 111 for 2. David Willey led the pursuit, scoring 44 off 25 balls to ensure the Guardians reached the target with 33 deliveries remaining.
The win kept the Dublin Guardians mathematically eligible for the top four at the time of the fixture. While the ETPL has continued with Match 28 between Glasgow and Amsterdam currently underway as of September 16, the Guardians’ performance at Malahide remains one of the most efficient defensive bowling displays of the season.
