Matthew Wade has retired from the Big Bash League following a 15-season career that concluded with the Hobart Hurricanes’ first championship title. The wicketkeeper-batter finished with 119 matches in the competition, representing both Melbourne franchises before his nine-season tenure in Tasmania.
Wade made 90 appearances for the Hurricanes, the second-most in the franchise’s history. He departs as the club’s record holder for the highest individual score, an unbeaten 130 scored in 2020. During his time with Hobart, Wade accumulated 2,446 runs at an average of 32.18 and a strike rate of 146.73.
The announcement follows the Hurricanes’ maiden BBL title win in BBL|14 (2024-25 season). Wade had previously retired from international cricket but remained with the Hurricanes to fulfill a two-year commitment that ended with the championship victory. He will not participate in the upcoming BBL|16 season.
“Matthew has been an incredibly important figure for the Hurricanes and Tasmanian cricket over a long period of time,” said Salliann Beams, Cricket Tasmania’s head of high performance. “His record speaks for itself, but what doesn’t always show up in the numbers is the influence he has had on the players and people around him.”
Hurricanes head coach Jeff Vaughan highlighted Wade’s competitive nature and his role in developing younger talent. “‘Wadey’ is one of those cricketers you always wanted on your side. He competed incredibly hard every time he walked onto the field and had the ability to change a game very quickly, but equally important has been what he has passed on to the players around him,” Vaughan said.
The move marks a full-time transition toward coaching for Wade. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Australian national T20 side in late 2024. While his BBL career has ended, his status for other domestic formats and global franchise leagues has not been officially confirmed.
