Leicestershire CCC has dropped to the bottom of the Division One table after being hit with a 27-point deduction by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP) imposed the penalty following a “poor” pitch rating for the surface used during the club’s Rothesay County Championship match against Glamorgan at Uptonsteel Grace Road in August.
The total deduction comprises the 19 points Leicestershire earned during the match against Glamorgan, which have been stripped, plus an additional eight-point penalty. The club was also fined £5,000 and issued a further eight-point deduction that remains suspended until the end of the 2027 season.
The CDP issued the rating due to excessive and uneven bounce during the fixture held between August 20 and 23. Conditions during the match drew criticism from Glamorgan captain Kiran Carlson, who noted that “every batter’s been hit on the gloves, a couple on the helmet, off good length balls, that would probably suggest it’s not a very good wicket.”
The application of the penalty has moved Leicestershire to 10th place in the standings with 89 points, falling below Hampshire. The verdict arrives while the squad is competing in the penultimate round of the season against Hampshire. Analysis of the current table shows Leicestershire is now 38 points adrift of eighth-placed Glamorgan. Even with a maximum-point victory in the current round, the club remains a heavy favorite for relegation with only one match remaining after this week.
Confirming the sanction, a Leicestershire CCC official statement noted: “Under ECB Rothesay County Championship Playing Condition 16.2.6, the 19 points earned in the match concerned will also be deducted from Leicestershire CCC’s 2026 Rothesay County Championship total. Accordingly, the Club will lose 27 points overall.”
The club has a 10-day window to appeal the CDP’s findings. If the penalty stands, head coach Alfonso Thomas and his side face imminent relegation to Division Two for the 2027 season.
