Asa Tribe’s maiden Division One century established a 356-run lead for Glamorgan over Surrey at the end of Day 2 at the Kia Oval. Tribe finished the day 142 not out, having batted for seven hours and faced 305 deliveries to guide the visitors to 339 for 5 at stumps.
The conditions on Wednesday were a stark departure from the opening day, where 20 wickets fell on a pitch that favored seamers. After Glamorgan (132) and Surrey (115) were both dismissed cheaply on Day 1, the surface visibly eased, allowing Tribe to anchor the second innings.
Tribe was supported by Kiran Carlson in a 114-run partnership for the third wicket. Carlson’s 57 followed a difficult run of form that included four ducks in his previous seven innings. Their stand helped Glamorgan pull away after the early dismissal of their openers.
Surrey’s bowling unit was depleted after Matt Fisher was forced to withdraw on Day 1 with a groin injury. James Taylor has been acting as a substitute for Fisher, but the home side struggled to find consistent breakthroughs on the flattened surface. A rare highlight for Surrey was the fielding of Adam Thomas, who took his seventh catch of the match to dismiss Ben Kellaway late in the final session.
Reflecting on his performance, Tribe said, “I had a clear plan” to navigate the day’s play. The target already facing Surrey is substantial, particularly given they have failed to reach 200 in their last five home innings at the Kia Oval.
This penultimate round of the Rothesay County Championship carries significant weight for both sides. Surrey currently sit sixth in the standings with 137 points, while Glamorgan are seventh with 127. A victory for Glamorgan would see them move ahead of their hosts as the season enters its final week.
