The Indian Premier League player auction will return to India, with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirming Goa as the host for the mid-December 2026 event. This decision ends a three-year period where auctions were held internationally in Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi.
The 2027 edition is tentatively scheduled as a one-day mini-auction on December 15–16, 2026. It marks the first time the event has been staged domestically since the 2023 auction in Kochi.
“This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December,” Saikia stated.
The 2027 season will operate under a total salary cap of ₹157 crore. This figure includes the auction purse, match fees, and incremental performance pay. The BCCI has also confirmed that the Impact Player rule will remain in effect through the 2027 season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will enter the auction as defending champions after winning consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026. The franchise is currently seeking a third straight trophy in the 2027 cycle.
The Goa event will also be the first for Zaheer Khan in his role as Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings. Khan, appointed on a one-year deal, replaces Stephen Fleming, who had held the position since 2009. Analysis suggests this move represents a significant cultural shift for the franchise, as Khan becomes their first Indian head coach after three seasons without a playoff appearance.
