England captain Jos Buttler will miss the series-deciding third ODI against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval on September 27 due to a hamstring injury. The injury, sustained during the second ODI run chase at Headingley, has resulted in a call-up for Surrey’s Dan Lawrence as squad cover.
Lawrence joins the white-ball setup immediately after featuring for Surrey in the County Championship against Somerset, where he scored an unbeaten 105. His inclusion provides England with an additional batting option as they contend with multiple availability issues. The squad is already without Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell, both of whom were ruled out prior to this latest development.
Analysis suggests Jordan Cox is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties and bat in the middle order for the decider. This move comes as the three-match series sits level at 1-1 following Sri Lanka’s 16-run victory at Headingley. Harry Brook will continue to lead the side, having served as captain for the duration of the series while Buttler initially focused on fitness recovery.
Reflecting on the injury and the second ODI defeat, Brook said: “It is always disappointing when you lose. I thought Sri Lanka played exceptionally well, especially the last 10-15 overs. They were electric in the field. They nailed every ball. Jos being the player he is, getting injured at that moment isn’t ideal.”
The England and Wales Cricket Board medical staff will monitor Buttler’s hamstring strain to determine his availability for upcoming winter schedules. For now, England must secure the series without their regular captain against a Sri Lankan side that successfully defended 302 to level the contest.
