India spin coach Sairaj Bahutule has characterized Ravindra Jadeja as a “utility player,” framing his role in the 2027 World Cup cycle as a competition with Axar Patel. Speaking before the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, Bahutule indicated that selection between the two all-rounders will be determined by performances and the specific requirements of pace-friendly conditions in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
“I think for me he has always been a utility player. He is somebody who can contribute with the bat as well as with the ball,” Bahutule said regarding Jadeja. The coach added that Jadeja has “definitely improved as a bowler over the last six months,” specifically noting his performances in the Sri Lanka Test series and current ODIs.
Despite the coach’s assessment, Jadeja has not taken a wicket in his last four ODIs, conceding 195 runs during that period. In the series opener in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, he finished with figures of 0/54. This contrast in form was highlighted by Kuldeep Yadav’s 4/40 in the same match, which helped India secure an 8-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Axar Patel is currently unavailable for the West Indies series due to his role in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. On September 22, Axar defended eight runs in the final over of a T20I against Japan to secure a two-run victory. His performance in high-pressure situations at the Asian Games remains a factor in the selection debate for the 2027 cycle.
Bahutule’s framing of Jadeja as a “utility player” suggests that the veteran’s seniority may no longer guarantee an automatic spot. The team management is evaluating players based on their ability to balance the side in varied environments. The second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on September 30 provides an immediate opportunity for Jadeja to address his recent wicketless run as India seeks to clinch the series.
