The 2026 Asian Games men’s cricket semi-final lineup is confirmed after all four quarter-final fixtures were abandoned due to persistent rain in Nisshin and Nagoya. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have progressed to the final four without a ball being bowled, advancing on the strength of their higher ICC T20I rankings and tournament seedings.
The total washout saw India’s scheduled match against Afghanistan, Pakistan’s fixture with Hong Kong, Sri Lanka’s meeting with Nepal, and Bangladesh’s game against Malaysia all called off. Under the knockout stage regulations for the 2026 edition, seedings act as the primary tie-breaker for washouts, ensuring the top-seeded teams move closer to the podium despite the lack of play.
Organizers have confirmed a rule change for this year’s tournament regarding the final result. In a departure from the 2023 edition, where India was awarded gold via their higher ranking after a rained-out final, the 2026 gold medal will be shared by both finalists if weather prevents a result on the final day.
The weather forecast remains a concern as Typhoon Surigae approaches central Japan, threatening the semi-finals on October 1 and the medal matches on October 3. Should the semi-finals also be washed out, India and Pakistan would progress to the final based on seedings. This scenario could lead to a shared gold medal between the rivals without either side completing a delivery in the tournament.
Bangladesh will enter their semi-final against Pakistan without batter Najmul Hossain Shanto, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the Games. Shanto is returning to Dhaka following a diagnosis of a low-grade fever and infection. Litton Das will lead the side through the knockout phase.
Ground conditions at the Korogi Sports Park have faced scrutiny, as the baseball-to-cricket conversion site has struggled with drainage. Tournament director Jarrad Shearer noted the intensity of the recovery efforts required to get the outfield back into playing condition. “Come tomorrow morning it will be all hands on deck to dry up the areas that aren’t under the covers,” Shearer said.
India are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in the first semi-final, followed by the Pakistan-Bangladesh match. With no reserve days currently slated for the semi-finals, the higher-seeded teams advance if the rain returns. The bronze and gold medal matches are set for October 3, depending on the path of the typhoon.
