Virat Kohli has climbed to the second position in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, trailing leader Shubman Gill by 20 rating points. The update follows the opening match of the India–West Indies series in Thiruvananthapuram, where both batters scored centuries.
Kohli reached a career-high rating of 796 points to overtake New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell for the number two spot. According to an ICC Release, “Kohli’s rating points now are his highest since July 2022.” While Gill maintained his top ranking with 816 points after scoring his 10th ODI century, Kohli narrowed the previous 34-point deficit by 14 points.
The performance saw Kohli become the fastest batter to reach the 15,000-run milestone in ODI cricket, achieving the mark in his 315th innings. This 20-point margin is the closest any batter has been to Gill since he first ascended to the No. 1 position.
The latest rankings also show significant shifts in the bowling department. South African spinner Keshav Maharaj moved up three places to third with 667 points after a six-wicket haul in the series against Australia. India’s Kuldeep Yadav jumped four spots to fifth with 623 points after taking 4/40 against the West Indies.
The three-match ODI series between India and the West Indies remains ongoing, with the second match scheduled for Guwahati on October 1. Australia’s series in South Africa is also currently active.
