Victoria’s Sam Harper struck an unbeaten century on his Australia A debut to rescue the visitors on Day 1 of the second unofficial Test against India A in Puducherry. Reaching his milestone in 146 deliveries, Harper ended the day at 101 not out to guide Australia A to 282/7 at stumps.
The Australian innings began with a top-order collapse, falling to 16/3 during the first session. India A debutant Nachiket Bhute claimed 3/35, including the wickets of Josh Philippe and Peter Handscomb in his opening spell. Australia A further slipped to 104/5 before Harper initiated a recovery.
Analysis of the day’s play indicates Harper’s proactive approach, including three sixes, served as a point of difference for a middle order that otherwise struggled to maintain a scoring rate. Harper found support from Liam Scott to navigate the afternoon as the pitch showed signs of assistance for the bowlers.
Left-arm spinner Shams Mulani took 3/77 from 23 overs, dismissing both Australian openers and Jason Sangha (46). However, Mulani struggled with his rhythm, finishing the day with 14 no-balls. Following the day’s play, Peter Handscomb discussed the challenges of the local conditions. “The Indian bowlers are incredibly accurate, consistent and don’t give a lot of bad balls. You’ve got to try and find a way to score off good balls. It can be tough when the ball misbehaves, but that’s the challenge of playing in India,” Handscomb said.
Australia A made three changes for this fixture, bringing in Harper, Jhye Richardson, and Liam Hatcher. These players replaced Brendan Doggett, Fergus O’Neill, and Campbell Kellaway, who returned to Australia for Sheffield Shield duties.
