The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially released the schedule for the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup, confirming England’s first match on Zimbabwean soil in over two decades and a newly structured tournament format.
England will face a qualifier at the Harare Sports Club on October 20, 2027. This fixture marks the first time the side has played in Zimbabwe since 2004, ending a 23-year absence from the country in World Cup competition.
The 2027 edition, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, features a 14-team, four-stage structure. The tournament opens with a ‘Super Series’ play-in for three teams, leading into a 12-team group stage where participants are divided into two groups of six.
While South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured automatic qualification as Full Member hosts, Namibia does not receive an automatic spot. The third host nation must qualify through the standard ICC pathway to participate in the tournament.
A significant change to the competitive structure is the introduction of a seven-team ‘Super 7’ phase. Points earned during the initial group stage will not be carried forward; all seven qualifying teams will start the second round with zero points. This ‘reset’ ensures that semi-final spots are determined solely by performance during the second phase of the tournament.
During the launch event in Cape Town, Virat Kohli confirmed that the 2027 event will be his final World Cup for India. “To maintain that intensity for 10 games takes a lot out of you in foreign conditions. It’s the last World Cup I am going to play for India, and my motivation is to leave everything out there,” Kohli stated.
Zimbabwe Cricket’s Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, highlighted the importance of the renewed schedule and England’s return. “The significance and magnitude of this tour cannot be overemphasised… thank you to the ECB for committing to the resumption of cricketing relations,” Makoni said, referencing the broader restoration of ties which includes a bilateral Test match in 2025.
England faces a unique logistical challenge during the group stage, with matches scheduled across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia within a 16-day window. Their group campaign is set to conclude in Windhoek against Namibia, provided the hosts successfully navigate the qualification process.
The tournament final will take place at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on November 21, following semi-finals hosted in Cape Town and Tshwane.
