Mike Baird has resigned as Chairman and Director of Cricket Australia (CA), effective from the Annual General Meeting on October 28, 2026. The decision follows a formal withdrawal of support from Cricket NSW, which rejected Baird as its board representative due to a divide over Big Bash League (BBL) privatization plans.
Former Australian batsman David Boon will assume the role of interim chair following the October AGM. Boon stated: “It is an enormous honour to take the role of Interim CA Chair during what is a hugely exciting and also challenging time for cricket.”
The leadership change is the result of a split between the national governing body and state associations in New South Wales and Queensland. Cricket NSW leadership, including board representative John Knox, opposed Baird’s push for private ownership of BBL franchises. While the CA board approved a 100 per cent sale of the Melbourne Renegades license for the 2027-28 season, NSW and Queensland have resisted the model for their respective teams.
Analysis of the “self-determination” model indicates it creates a fragmented system for the BBL. Under this framework, some franchises like the Renegades, Melbourne Stars, and Perth Scorchers are positioned for private investment, while others, including the Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat, and Adelaide Strikers, remain under state control. This two-tier structure was the core point of contention that led to the withdrawal of support from the NSW board.
Baird declined to seek an independent seat on the CA board, choosing to step down entirely rather than continue without the unanimous backing of state associations. His resignation also follows his appointment as CEO of the NRMA Group in April 2026.
“I believe Australian cricket continues to be well led by the CA Board,” Baird said in a statement. “Their mix of significant experience and passion for the game gives me great confidence for the future.”
The transition occurs as Cricket Australia manages the first franchise sale under the new ownership model, with the Renegades license process expected to conclude before the 2027-28 season.
