The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Jonathan Trott as the permanent head coach of the England Lions for the 2026-27 winter schedule. Trott succeeds Andrew Flintoff, who vacated the position following his appointment as head coach of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
The permanent appointment follows Trott’s interim tenure earlier this month, where he led the Lions to a 2-0 T20 series victory over Sri Lanka. His mandate covers a three-continent programme including tours of the West Indies, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
“Having played for the Lions myself, I know how valuable the experience can be in helping players develop, both on and off the field, and it played an important part in my own journey,” Trott said.
The winter itinerary begins with a white-ball tour of the West Indies from October 27 to November 21. The squad will then travel to South Africa for an ODI and first-class series (November 25 – December 23), before concluding the schedule in Sri Lanka from February 18 to March 14, 2027.
ECB Performance Director Ed Barney cited Trott’s international coaching record as a primary factor in the selection. “Jonathan Trott is an outstanding coach who has a proven record in international cricket. We are delighted that he has agreed to lead our Lions programme during a busy winter,” Barney said.
Analysis of the appointment suggests the ECB is utilizing the heavy 50-over schedule in South Africa and Sri Lanka to build bench strength for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Trott’s experience coaching Afghanistan through their rise in international cricket also provides specific insight into the conditions expected during the final leg of the tour.
The ECB has not yet confirmed the status of the assistant coaching staff for the full winter schedule. Ravi Bopara and Graeme Swann served as assistants during the recent T20 series sweep, but their roles for the upcoming three tours remain unconfirmed.
