Leicestershire County Cricket Club has had its 2026 points deduction reduced from 27 to 19 following an administrative correction by the Cricket Discipline Panel (CDP). While the club remains officially relegated in ninth place, a separate merit-based appeal against a ‘poor’ pitch rating could still alter the final Division One standings.
The CDP amended its original sanction after acknowledging that 19 points earned during an August match against Glamorgan were already automatically forfeited under ECB Playing Conditions. The panel determined that an additional eight-point penalty was disproportionate once the mandatory deduction was accounted for.
Leicestershire finished the 2026 season with 119 points, 17 points behind eighth-placed Essex. If the club successfully overturns the ‘poor’ pitch rating in its upcoming appeal, the full 19 points would be reinstated. This scenario would move Leicestershire to 138 points, retroactively relegating Essex to Division Two.
The disciplinary charge follows a fixture at Uptonsteel Grace Road where officials noted 43 instances of uneven bounce. The club’s defense cited an unscheduled shoot for ‘Dada,’ a Sourav Ganguly biopic, which prevented groundsmen from covering the pitch for eight hours during a 35°C heatwave.
Head groundsman Callum Lewin stated: “We also had an unscheduled Bollywood filming event four days before, and I wasn’t allowed to work on the pitch. I wasn’t allowed to cover it or anything.”
Chief Executive Emma White clarified that the reduction in penalty was an administrative adjustment rather than the result of an appeal. “The (CDP) Panel made clear that the latest hearing and Amended Decision, which relates to the sanction alone, were not appeal proceedings. Our position on the charge is therefore unchanged. We continue to believe it should not have been upheld,” White said.
Warwickshire was crowned 2026 champions on September 27, but the final composition of the 2027 divisions depends on the outcome of Leicestershire’s challenge. The ECB has not confirmed a date for the merit-based hearing.
