Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of competitive cricket for at least three weeks after a fresh scan on September 26 revealed an injury to his right shin. The setback occurred ahead of India‘s three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which starts on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
With Pandya unavailable, India has integrated Nitish Kumar Reddy into the senior ODI setup. Bowling coach Morne Morkel identified the 21-year-old as a primary candidate for the seam-bowling all-rounder role. “It will be great for Indian cricket if we can keep on developing him and for him to compete for that all-rounder spot. He’s got all the talent and all the ability to do that,” Morkel said during a pre-match press conference.
Reddy was originally named in the squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan but was withdrawn to join the senior ODI team. Vipraj Nigam has replaced Reddy in the Asian Games squad, which is also missing Varun Chakaravarthy due to injury. The senior ODI squad currently includes uncapped pace options Auqib Nabi and Gurnoor Brar, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh remain on duty at the Asian Games.
The series against the West Indies marks the start of India’s preparation cycle for the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup. Head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of player fitness for the tournament in South Africa. “You can’t go into a World Cup half-cooked. Whether it’s Hardik (Pandya), whether it’s Jasprit Bumrah, they are going to be extremely important for us in (South) Africa,” Gambhir noted.
India also monitored the fitness of Shubman Gill following an injury scare during a net session on September 25. Gill was struck on the elbow by a delivery from Mohammed Siraj but returned to face throwdowns later that day. He remains in contention for the opening match at the Greenfield International Stadium.
The visiting West Indies team enters the series following a financial restructuring by their board, which included a 25 percent reduction in player retainer fees. For India, the series serves as an evaluation of depth in the all-rounder department as Pandya begins another period of rehabilitation.
