Durham Cricket has appointed Ryan Campbell as Director of Cricket and High-Performance Coaching. The permanent appointment follows a 2026 season where the club secured the Division Two title and promotion to the top flight without losing a match.
Campbell succeeds Marcus North in the executive role. He will lead the search for a new head coach to take charge for the 2027 Division One season, as the club transitions its leadership structure following the conclusion of the domestic campaign. Durham finished the 14-game season with nine wins and five draws, ending the year with a weather-affected draw against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
Durham CEO Tim Bostock cited the importance of internal stability in the decision. “He has big shoes to fill in replacing Marcus North but continuity was an important factor in making this decision alongside delivering our long-term vision for Durham Cricket,” Bostock said.
The administrative change follows the international retirement of Mark Wood on September 22. The fast bowler, who will continue to play for Durham in the T20 Blast, cited chronic knee injuries for his decision. Wood stated: “On medical advice, test cricket and 50-over cricket are not possible, so the England dream has slowly been ground out of me over the past year.”
Analysis suggests Campbell’s elevation to a Director role, occurring alongside Wood’s international retirement, indicates a strategic shift toward managing the workloads of high-profile players. This oversight will likely include balancing the availability of club captain Ben Stokes and seamer Matthew Potts, who finished the 2026 season as the leading wicket-taker in Division Two with 60 wickets.
Campbell begins the recruitment process for a new head coach immediately, with the club seeking a candidate to maintain the performance levels established during the 2026 title run.
