Nottinghamshire resumed Day 2 of their County Championship match against Sussex at 232-9, following a lower-order recovery at the County Ground in Hove. The visitors recovered from 158-8 on the opening day to keep their pursuit of batting bonus points alive.
The first day was highlighted by Sussex overseas seamer Jaydev Unadkat reaching the milestone of 500 first-class wickets. Unadkat achieved the feat by dismissing Olly Stone. Reflecting on the achievement, Unadkat said: “So to get to 500 is a special occasion and I’m going to treasure it for a long time.”
Analysis of the current Division One standings indicates that Nottinghamshire require 18 more runs to reach the 250-run mark for their first batting bonus point. This target is significant as Nottinghamshire currently sit in second place with 185 points, trailing leaders Somerset (189 points) by four points, with Warwickshire (184 points) following closely in third.
Brett Hutton led the Nottinghamshire resistance, finishing the first day unbeaten on 59 from 120 balls. He was supported by Tom Giles in a 74-run partnership for the ninth wicket. The stand was eventually broken by Tom Price, who dismissed Giles for 32 to finish with figures of 3-33 for Sussex.
Hutton spoke on the importance of individual contributions during the title run-in, stating: “Everyone wants to be the man to put their hand up”. Nottinghamshire entered the second morning with one wicket remaining and the opportunity to add to their first-innings total.
