South Africa‘s pace bowling resources have reached a crisis point on the eve of their ODI series against Australia. Kwena Maphaka has become the fourth frontline seamer to be ruled out with a hamstring injury, with Boland paceman Lizaad Williams named as his replacement.
Maphaka sustained a right hamstring strain during training in preparation for the opening match in Durban. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed the injury in a statement, noting: “The seamer sustained the injury during training in preparation for the series and will undergo assessments to determine the extent of the injury. Boland paceman Lizaad Williams has been named as his replacement and will join the squad today.”
The withdrawal of Maphaka marks the fourth hamstring-related casualty for the Proteas’ pace battery in 16 days. He joins Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Ottneil Baartman on the injury list. Williams, who has eight ODI caps, joins a squad that has already seen Nqobani Mokoena replace Ngidi and Duan Jansen step in for Baartman.
Analysis of the current injury trend suggests a potential systemic issue with conditioning loads or training surfaces, given the concentration of hamstring strains across the bowling group. This cluster of injuries leaves South Africa’s attack heavily reliant on Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee, while also removing the left-arm variety Maphaka offered the tactical setup.
Despite the white-ball crisis, head coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence that spearhead Kagiso Rabada will return for the Test series in October. Rabada is currently undergoing rehabilitation for his own right hamstring strain. “It’s going quite nicely, the rehab and the programs that he’s on. I’d be very surprised if we didn’t see him during the Test series,” Conrad stated.
The three-match ODI series is scheduled to begin tomorrow, September 24, at Kingsmead in Durban. The teams will then travel to the Wanderers in Johannesburg on September 27, before the series concludes in Potchefstroom on September 30.
