Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is among the most destructive batsmen in the shortest format. Glenn Maxwell, in an interview with ABC Grandstand, voiced his opinion on if IPL 2020 and T20 World Cup can be played behind closed doors.
BCCI, the parent body of the IPL, is keeping the July slot open for the tournament to get underway behind closed doors. Maxwell thinks it is possible to play the IPL without the crowd, but a big tournament like T20 World Cup can not be played or survive in the same circumstances.
“… it’s going to be hard for us to have crowds. I think if IPL goes ahead, they can probably survive without any crowds, but I can’t see the T20 World Cup surviving without any crowd there,” Maxwell told ABC Grandstand.
“It’s going to be hard for us to justify having a World Cup when we can’t get people into the grounds. So I can’t see it happening soon. We’ve got to take care of everyone’s health and wellbeing.”
The T20 World Cup will draw a crowd from around the world. In a big-ticket tournament, empty stands will not only dampen the morale but also take a hit on ICC. However, it remains to be seen if the T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia will commence this year or gets called-off due to the widespread of the novel coronavirus.
