West Indies opening batter Justin Greaves has been officially ruled out of the second ODI against India in Guwahati due to a calf injury. The tourists, who trail 1-0 in the three-match series, will be without their only centurion from the series opener for the encounter at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.
Greaves sustained the injury during the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram while scoring a maiden century of 101 from 108 balls. While he anchored a 135-run opening stand with John Campbell—the first century partnership for a West Indian opening pair in India since 2019—the injury prevented him from fielding during India’s eight-wicket victory.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed the opening batter’s unavailability on matchday. “Justin Greaves has been ruled out of the second game of the ODI series against India after sustaining a calf injury. Greaves picked up the injury during his innings in the opening match of the series,” the board stated.
The 32-year-old, who became the third-oldest West Indian to record a maiden ODI hundred in the series opener, leaves a vacancy at the top of the order. While Sherfane Rutherford is expected to return to the playing XI after missing the first match for personal reasons, the team management must determine a new opening partner for Campbell. Potential options include Jewel Andrew or promoting Keacy Carty from the middle order.
Greaves remains highly doubtful for the third and final ODI, which takes place on October 3 in New Chandigarh. His injury status is of particular concern as he was already omitted from the West Indies squad for the T20I leg of the tour.
India leads the series 1-0 following a dominant chase led by Shubman Gill. The second match is a Day/Night fixture scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM local time, with the visitors needing a win to keep the series alive on a surface at Guwahati that typically favors high scoring.
