Kevin Pietersen is in active discussions with England Test head coach Stephen Fleming to serve as an advisory mentor for the 2027 Ashes series. The former captain confirmed the approach for a strategic role but has ruled out a full-time position within the team dressing room.
Pietersen currently holds a contract as a specialist mentor for England’s white-ball teams, a role scheduled through the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite his current commitments, Pietersen indicated an openness to assist the Test side for the home Ashes summer.
“I’ve got a pretty mad schedule, (but) I wouldn’t say no,” Pietersen said. “I have had a conversation with Stephen but I don’t think that necessarily means I need to be in a dressing room.”
The discussions have already involved specific tactical communication. Pietersen noted that he has consulted with Fleming regarding the “language” to be used with England’s Test batters ahead of the tour to South Africa and the 2027 home season. Analysis suggests Fleming’s outreach indicates a desire to maintain an aggressive tactical identity within the squad, focusing on psychological and strategic framing rather than traditional technical coaching.
The 2027 Ashes series is set to begin at Trent Bridge on June 18. This development follows a leadership change in the Test setup, where Stephen Fleming was appointed head coach in July 2026 and Joe Root was reappointed captain following the international retirement of Ben Stokes.
