Marizanne Kapp has withdrawn from the final year of her contract with the Melbourne Stars, opting to prioritize South Africa’s international schedule over the WBBL|12 season. The all-rounder was entering the third and final year of a pre-signed deal with the franchise.
Concurrently, the Melbourne Stars have confirmed the returns of England internationals Dani Gibson and Amy Jones. Following the removal of the overseas player draft for the 2026 season, the Stars secured the pair through direct signings.
Stars General Manager James Rosengarten emphasized the value of the English duo’s versatility. “It was a priority for us to have both Dani and Amy return this season, so we’re really pleased with this outcome,” Rosengarten said. “They are both very talented cricketers in multiple ways, which is so valuable in this format.”
Kapp’s decision to opt out follows a consistent presence in the league; she has featured in every WBBL season to date, representing four different franchises across 11 editions. Her withdrawal is linked to South Africa’s upcoming multi-format tour of India, which includes a Test match scheduled to begin on December 9, 2026—just four days after the WBBL final on December 5.
“We are of course disappointed to be without someone of Marizanne’s calibre this season,” Rosengarten said. “She is one of the world’s finest all-round players but we understand her priorities at this stage and it will present another list opportunity for the Stars.”
Analysis: Squad Impact and Scheduling
The withdrawal of Kapp leaves the Melbourne Stars with one vacant overseas roster spot. While Jones provides wicketkeeping and batting depth and Gibson serves as a bowling all-rounder, the vacancy specifically opens a gap for a senior seam-bowling option. The tournament is scheduled to run from October 29 to December 5, 2026.
Kapp’s exit highlights a broader scheduling challenge for South African players during the 2026/27 summer. With the Proteas Women also hosting Australia in early 2027, the availability of other South African internationals, such as Adelaide Strikers’ Laura Wolvaardt, remains a point of observation for the league as the India Test series approaches.
