Tom Westley has resigned as Essex club captain following a 2026 season defined by personal batting struggles and the lingering threat of relegation. The 37-year-old, who has led the county since January 2020, announced his decision on September 28 after Essex concluded their County Championship Division One campaign in eighth place.
Westley’s departure follows a year where he scored 519 runs at an average of 24.71 across 12 matches. In a statement released by the club, Westley cited his inability to meet his own standards as the primary driver for his resignation.
“Personally, I feel that my biggest value is scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories, something which I haven’t been able to achieve this year. For that reason, I feel now is the right time for a change and for the club to explore a new direction,” Westley said.
The transition in leadership occurs as Essex awaits a final legal resolution regarding their top-flight status. Although the team finished 17 points clear of ninth-placed Leicestershire, a pending appeal over pitch regulations could still alter the standings. On September 28, the Discipline Panel reinstated eight points to Leicestershire, leaving 19 points from an original 27-point deduction still under contest. If those remaining points are returned, Essex would face demotion to Division Two despite the season being finished.
Director of Cricket Chris Silverwood acknowledged Westley’s contribution to the club’s leadership group over seven seasons. “For six years, he has led Essex Cricket with immense pride, passion and commitment, and we are grateful for everything,” Silverwood said.
The 2026 season also saw Westley make a unique entry into the record books. In April, he became the first player to be replaced under the ECB’s trial ‘significant life event/injury’ substitution rule, a moment that preceded a difficult summer for the top-order batter.
Essex will now begin the process of identifying a successor to lead the club into the 2027 season, though the divisional level of that campaign remains dependent on the final verdict of the points appeal.
