Delhi Capitals started their Vivo Indian Premier League 2021 campaign with a 7 wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
Entertaining punches on top of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw helped DC chase down the challenging total with ease.
Although DC was without the services of their major foreign players such as Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, they played some strong back-ups, with Tom Curran and Chris Woakes making their debuts for DC.
Dc needed an aggressive start from their openers after a challenging target of 189, and that’s all Dhawan and Shaw did.
Runs came in very quickly, and good cricket shots were played. While Dhawan took over Sam Curran from one side, Shaw took on Shardul Thakur for 3 consecutive boundaries.
Shaw picked up the gap for fun, raced to a total of 65 with no wicket at the end of the power play, putting pressure on the CSK bowling line-up.
CSK captain MS Dhoni started the spin in the attack to end the opening partnership, and it almost gave him success, but Shaw got a chance in the 8th over after being dropped in the outfield by Moeen Ali’s bowling.
Shaw continued the demolition while Dhawan at the other end flowed the runs and gave the ball in time for perfection as the DC openers brought their respective half-centuries in no time.
DC maintained their run rate at the end of 12 overs, and the way Dhawan and Shaw hit the ball wanted to finish the game early.
Dwayne Bravo got Shaw for Chennai Super Kings, who gave Moeen Ali a catch on wide delivery directly in the deep. 72 off 38 balls, the right-handed batsman did his part to keep dc in command.
Rishabh Pant, who captained the IPL for the first time, joined Dhawan and straight away cuts for four in the short and wide delivery bowled by Deepak Chahar, who conceded 12 runs in his last over.
Dhawan, meanwhile, continued to play through the bowlers’ lines and just hit the ball in the gap. However, after crushing Shardul Thakur for two consecutive fours in the 17th over, he was trapped in front, ending a highly entertaining inning.
Pant stayed at the crease and ended the chase in style, hitting away the 4th ball of the 19th for a four.
Earlier, CSK lost both openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad, early. While Avesh Khan sacked du Plessis and made the most of his pace and Wankhede’s surface, Gaikwad failed to mark after being caught at first slip courtesy of a quick catch from Dhawan, giving Woakes his first wicket of the match.
Suresh Raina marked his return for CSK and joined Moeen Ali at the other end, after which CSK quickly got into trouble.
Moeen attacked Avesh’s pace and smashed the seamer to some boundaries. Raina hit R Ashwin for consecutive fours in the fifth over, including a trademark inside-out shot, before CSK went 33/2 at the end of the power play.
Moeen hit two sixes off Ashwin in the 9th over, but the right-arm spinner finally got his man, after which Moeen tried to get a little bit nervous and finally played it in the hands of Dhawan, who took a running catch.
Halfway through, CSK placed at 71/3, with Raina and Ambati Rayudu in the middle.
Raina hit two sixes against Amit Mishra with a slog sweep over deep midwicket, who was bowling brilliantly to the left-handed batsman.
Raina and Rayudu scored their 50 runs partnerships on just 24 deliveries, leading CSK to the chase, the first batsman to score 50 of this season’s IPL.
Tom Curran helped DC pull things back after Rayudu’s crucial wicket when Dhawan caught another catch safely. Ravindra Jadeja joined Raina in the middle and hit two boundaries straightaway.
With five overs to go, DC took the all-important wicket of dangerous-looking Raina, after which left-handed batters were involved in a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja, who was finally run out by himself.
Adding to CSK’s concerns, skipper MS Dhoni faced the second delivery, giving Avesh his 2nd wicket.
CSK reached the 150 mark at the end of 17 overs, which is expected to end on a high note. Avesh bowled beautifully at death overs with figures of 2-23 from his 4 overs.
Sam Curran hit two sixes and a four in the final over, and it was to his brother Tom Curran.
Curran and Jadeja brought up 50 runs partnership, placing CSK with a reasonable total, Woakes takes the wicket on the last ball of the innings.
