India Under-19s claimed a 1-0 lead in the three-match Youth ODI series following a seven-run victory over Australia Under-19s in Rajkot. The opening match was reduced to 20 overs per side due to rain, necessitating an aggressive approach from both teams.
Yashbardhan Chauhan was named Player of the Match for a decisive all-round performance. Chauhan anchored the Indian innings with 54 runs off 34 balls and later contributed with the ball, returning figures of 2 for 28 to stifle the Australian chase.
The fixture drew significant attention due to the presence of two second-generation cricketers in the Indian XI. Aaryavir Sehwag, son of Virender Sehwag, opened the innings on his debut and scored 28 runs off 26 balls. Wicketkeeper-batter Anvay Dravid, son of Rahul Dravid, provided late impetus with a brisk 38 off 18 deliveries. His knock, which included two fours and three sixes, resulted in a strike rate of 211.11, providing a contrast to the defensive style associated with his father.
Australia’s pursuit of the target was led by captain Jack Czosnek, who top-scored for his side. Czosnek struck 55 runs off just 27 balls, keeping the visitors in contention until he was dismissed in the 19th over. The result was decided in the final over, where Mohit Ulva defended 11 runs and claimed two wickets to secure the win for India.
Indian captain Lakshya Raichandani reflected on the responsibility of leading the national youth side. “It is a great opportunity; it’s an honour to be a captain for the Indian team. It is an added responsibility, so I am very excited for this opportunity, and I want to lead everyone, create a positive environment and give my 100%,” Raichandani said.
The teams will meet again in Rajkot for the second Youth ODI on September 21, followed by the final match of the series on September 23.
