Brendan Doggett has reached India to lead the Australia A pace attack in Puducherry and serve as an ambassador for the Big Bash League’s first fixture in the country. The fast bowler arrived in Chennai on September 17-18, visiting the MA Chidambaram Stadium to promote the upcoming BBL 16 season opener.
The Melbourne Renegades are scheduled to face the Perth Scorchers at the Chennai venue on December 12, 2026. Doggett, who represented Australia as the fifth First Nations player in Test cricket during the 2025 Ashes, visited the ground’s facilities before joining his teammates for the Australia A tour.
“I just arrived in Chennai today, which is really exciting. Coming through the change rooms, you get to see so much of the history that’s been created in and around this ground… it’s a real honour to be here and a real privilege to have the opportunity to play a Big Bash game here in December,” Doggett said during his visit to Chepauk.
Following the promotional events, Doggett moved to Puducherry for the multi-format series against India A. All matches, including two unofficial four-day Tests starting September 22 and three one-dayers from October 6–11, will be held at the CAP-Siechem Stadium. This tour marks Doggett’s return to competitive cricket after a major hamstring injury in February 2026 sidelined him for several months.
The pacer confirmed he has maintained full fitness for the past two months. “The body is going well so far. I’ve been up and bowling and look forward to performing against India A and hopefully playing some Test cricket. I’ve been up and running at full fitness now for probably the last two months,” he stated.
The Australia A squad includes Jhye Richardson and Peter Handscomb, with the series serving as a trial ahead of the senior team’s five-Test tour of India. The 2026-27 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to run from January 21 to March 3, 2027.
Analysis: Doggett’s dual role suggests Cricket Australia is utilizing players with subcontinent experience to market the BBL in India while simultaneously assessing their fitness for the upcoming Test series. Staging the Australia A matches in Puducherry instead of Chennai may be intended to preserve the MA Chidambaram Stadium surface for the December BBL opener and the January Test matches.
