Ajit Agarkar has informed the BCCI that he will not seek a contract extension, ending his tenure as chief selector on October 4, 2026. The decision was reportedly communicated to board officials prior to the 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in New Delhi.
Agarkar was appointed on July 4, 2023, and presided over a period where India secured the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. His tenure also included a final appearance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Reports suggest differences between Agarkar and the BCCI top brass regarding the ODI future of Rohit Sharma contributed to the selector’s decision to step aside. While the committee had explored transition roadmaps for senior players, Rohit Sharma’s century at Lord’s on July 19, 2026, reportedly altered the board’s outlook on the 2027 World Cup cycle. Agarkar’s absence from a high-profile review meeting on September 3 served as a precursor to this development.
The BCCI General Body has authorized office-bearers to finalize the selection committee leadership within the next 15 days. Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Agarkar as chairman.
Speaking after the AGM, Devajit Saikia confirmed the timeline for the new appointment. “We still have fifteen days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We will take a decision in appropriate time and we will let you know about it. Today, there was no discussion on any individual,” Saikia said.
The board is expected to announce the new chief selector by October 3. The incoming chairman will oversee the transition period as Shubman Gill is integrated into leadership roles for the white-ball formats.
