Australia claimed its first bilateral ODI series victory in Zimbabwe since 2004, defeating the hosts by 84 runs at the Harare Sports Club on Friday. The result gives the visitors an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Travis Head provided the centerpiece of the Australian innings, scoring 112 off 84 balls. He reached his hundred in 75 deliveries, establishing a new Australian record for the fastest ODI century against Zimbabwe. His knock helped Australia reach 356/6, their highest-ever ODI total against Zimbabwe, overtaking the previous record of 350 set in 2014.
“It was nice to spend some time in the middle and spend some time out there with Mitch (Marsh). We did not train for a couple of days which was good actually… It was nice to be fresh. We just tried to be aggressive,” Head said.
Cooper Connolly contributed 78 off 69 balls, recording his third consecutive ODI half-century. Captain Mitchell Marsh noted the impact of the younger players in the squad following the win.
“I thought it was a complete performance from the boys. Obviously, the way Travis batted and the platform that we were able to set for our middle order. It’s great to see guys like Cooper Connolly and Peake coming in and playing roles like that,” Marsh said.
In the second innings, Adam Zampa claimed 2/62 to reach the milestone of 200 wickets in One Day Internationals. Josh Hazlewood, returning to the side, finished with 2/48 as Zimbabwe was bowled out for 272.
The victory was tempered by an injury to Billy Stanlake. The fast bowler suffered a side strain during his fifth over and was forced to leave the field, leaving Australia a bowler short for the remainder of the chase.
Analysis: Australia’s selection of younger players is yielding immediate results. Connolly’s three successive scores of 50 or more since his debut suggest he is being fast-tracked for a long-term role. Meanwhile, Stanlake’s injury during his fifth over affects the narrative of his comeback as he attempted to audition for the Test squad.
Cameron Green missed the fixture due to right shoulder soreness. He is expected to return for the third and final ODI on September 20 at the Harare Sports Club.
